Upwell Playing Field

We’re pleased to announce that, as well as running our first-ever Virtual Horse & Pony Show, we are staging a physical Show this coming Saturday (July 18). With government restrictions still affecting this sort of event, pre-registration for the day is critical. Please visit www.facebook.com/upwellhorseandponyshow for details. Unless you have registered

you won’t be able to join us on the day and will be turned away.

Virtual Horse & Pony Show

We are pleased to announce our first-ever Virtual Horse & Pony Show. The shows have been a much-loved signature series of events across every summer but, this year, lockdown has curtailed them to date. A series of classes will be launched online on 4 July, with entrants submitting photographs for examination by the roster of experienced show judges. Their verdicts will be announced around two weeks later, with rosettes being posted to successful winners shortly after.

It’s an idea that has been trailed with success by other Horse & Pony Clubs across the country as a way of keeping events going, ahead of any easing of government restrictions in the weeks ahead. “This is far from ideal, but we think it’s a great way of keeping our club going in this difficult time,” said Pip Read, who organises the shows with Committee Secretary Ros Shorting and Liz Thorpe. “I hope it’s going to be very successful.”

Full details of classes will be available on the shows’ Facebook page –

We had the first boot fair of the year on June 25 and it was very busy. It’s the start of some return to normality for the field’s many events. “We’re hoping for some sort of season – and a return to our usual levels of fundraising – just as soon as we are able,” said Chair Christine Aston.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following organisations for their support and the donation of the best of breed rosettes.

· Shire Horse Society

· Clydesdale Horse Society

· Suffolk Horse Society

· Percheron Society

Our supreme and reserve supreme rosettes have been kindly sponsored by M and J Burks.

Upwell Playing Field is a registered charity, run by the Upwell Playing Field Committee.
Our aims are simple: to provide and maintain 2.5 acres of open space for use by all ages and abilities in our community.

We are almost totally reliant on community support/funding for all financial aspects of running the field, our new sports pavilion, which can be hired for private events here, and the children’s play area.

All funds raised from our events go towards the constant upkeep of the field and facilities.

  • From April to mid-October, we run a weekly Thursday-morning  Car Boot

  • Across the summer, we have Horse & Pony shows, inhand and ridden showing, with end-of-season presentation

  • Each year, in early July, we host Party in the Park with live music from local bands, a BBQ and bar, and the following day we put on the Summer Fair with stalls, games, displays, BBQ, bar, refreshments, rides, a dog show and a great display of classic and vintage vehicles of all types.

Upwell Playing Field was registered as a charity on 11th July 1962, but it began life as Upwell Parish Rooms. The parish rooms are long gone, but the original conveyance document for the playing field is dated 8th May 1957. The then ‘guardians’ (it wasn’t registered as a charity right at the beginning) of the parish rooms invested money raised by the sale of the rooms and gave the playing field to the community. Today’s Upwell Playing Field Committee still receives an income and interest generated by the parish rooms investment and the Upwell Playing Field Committee placed the parish rooms as an associated charity with the Charity Commission so that both are linked.

You can find out more details about the Upwell Playing Field Committee here. We are always looking for more volunteers and meet on the second Tuesday of every month!

There are a few rules that we need to enforce to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment of this precious open space. You can read more about them here.

We look forward to seeing you at Upwell Playing Field, New Road, Upwell, Norfolk PE14 9AB. You can contact us by emailing here (rosdshorting@talktalk.net) or by calling 01945 773604
